Hello to a new pho house and goodbye to some great ribs

Nashville Restaurants and Food
Dai Viet and Jimmy Carl's Lunchbox

A first look at Dai Viet restaurant brings some seriously huge bowls of pho to the table. The Antioch restaurant has been open for a couple of months. They let you choose your size of bowl. The small bowl of pho is about right, the large bowl pretty damn big and the super bowl is crazy. The good news is that the pho is worth super-sizing. The pho tai, nam, bo vien has a generous portion of rare steak, well done beef and meat balls and a solid, flavorful broth. It's the kind of pho that doesn't need any help at all, but clearly you're going to put hoisin, fish sauce and sriracha hot sauce in there eventually, just for kicks. The menu offers tendon and tripe pho for the traditionalists. All this makes us wonder about the seafood hot pots they offer and of course the vermicelli. We'll have a complete review in a few weeks.

We can't tell you had sad we are about the latest Jimmy Carl's Lunchbox news. The Nashville Scene is reporting that Jimmy Carl's, currently operating out of the Station Inn, will be shutting down in November. The problem, according the article, is the narrow profit margin with lunch-only business. They would like to open up a joint in a bigger space, to offer dinner and beer. We can't imagine a better opportunity for investors. These guys cook up some of the best barbecue in Nashville and it would be a shame to let those skills go to waste.

Did you guys notice any banh mi's on the menu?

Pete: The do have banh mi and a few different varities (grilled spicy pork, pork paste etc). The one I had suffered from oversized bun and undersized filling, which was a shame because all of the ingredients, including the bun were quite good. At $3 a pop they probably don't want to increase the filling....I'm going to suggest they cut the bun in half or seek smaller bakery goods.

Can't wait to read what ovo-lacto-pescetarian options are available at the Dai Viet.

Unfortunate...I'll definitely try them out and see how they compare to Kien Giang. It's nice to now have an option on the south side. Sometimes driving all the way to West Nashville doesn't make sense.

Does this place, or any other Vietnamese place in Nashville, serve a vegetarian pho? I had a place in Indianapolis that made veggie pho with tofu and seitan; I miss it something awful. If there isn't one, maybe someone should suggest it to one of these places--I know a lot of vegetarians who would head right over, and my family would be first in line! (Love your blog by the way--thanks for the great info!)

Joell-
I am sad to report that there is nary a veggie friendly pho served here...I have yet to find the sought after veggie pho in Nashville (except when I was lucky enough to have a Pho pro make me my own from scratch). But I can hope and dream that someday I will stumble upon it. Anyone else have any ideas?

Not good news about Jimmy Carl's. That is just too sad. Partially it is the location on 12th S., not completely walkable from 4th and Church, the downtown lunch area. The green free bus is no help either. Never can figure that darn thing out. I hope that Jimmy Carl's can be reborn soon and in a more profitable location.

I just got back from seattle and had pho for the first time. THE BEST MEAL OF MY LIFE...bok choy, tofu, carrots, all kinds of veggies, in a veggie broth. so delicious. I'm also a vegetarian and have been searching for a veggie pho in nashville. how hard can it be? i'm thinking of bringing in my own can of vegetable broth to see if they'll do it :)
